Sol

Sol, a typical yellow dwarf.

A yellow dwarf is a classification of star which is undergoing hydrogen-helium conversion. The yellow color arises from the mid-range (5,400 - 6,000 Kelvin) temperature resulting from the internal fusion reactions. Typical yellow dwarves have a life span of roughly 10 billion years, expanding to become a red giant following depletion of internal hydrogen supply. These red giants eventually contract, leaving behind helium and other cosmic gases to form a planetary nebula. Well-known yellow dwarf stars include Sol and Betelgeuse. On stardate 49485.2 the USS Voyager vistited the Hemikek IV, a planet in the Hemikek yellow dwarf star system (VOY: "Investigations").
