A whoopee cushion was a inflatable device used for a joke by Humans. It was meant to simulate flatuence when someone sat down where the whoopee cushion was located.

In 2376, when the The Doctor posed as Captain of the USS Voyager to fend off the Hierarchy and timidly sat down in Voyager's command chair for the first time, Ensign Tom Paris remarked that he would give anything for a whoopee cushion at that time. Ensign Harry Kim was unfamiliar with the whoopee cushion and what it was. Paris replied that it was "ancient technology". (VOY: "Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy")
