The Wadi were a spacefaring humanoid species from a planet in the Gamma Quadrant. They were characterized by large symbols on their foreheads. (DS9: "Move Along Home")

History[]

In 2369, a Vulcan ship made first contact with the Wadi. Three weeks later, a Wadi ship arrived at Deep Space 9 with a diplomatic delegation, the first from the Gamma Quadrant. However, the Wadi were only interested in gaming at Quark's. After being cheated at dabo by Quark, the displeased Wadi demanded that he participate in a new, "honest" game, Chula. The game trapped Benjamin Sisko, Kira Nerys, Jadzia Dax, and Julian Bashir in a perilous virtual reality that paralleled the course of the game in the real world. After the game was finished, the Wadi leader Falow revealed that they were never in any danger. (DS9: "Move Along Home")

In 2381, Falow and a female companion operated a recruitment booth at a fair on Tulgana IV that offered various games and toys, including Chula, three-dimensional chess, Ktarian games, Bat'leths & BiHnuchs, and wearable Ferengi ears. After being heckled into a furious rampage, Ensign Brad Boimler yelled at them, "You're always getting people trapped inside of games. Stop trapping people inside of games!" (LD: "Reflections")

Society and culture[]

Chula board

A Chula board

The Wadi had an unusual preoccupation with games and gambling. Their signature game was Chula, which was played both with pieces on an elaborate board and by a second set of players within a virtual world generated by the gameplay. Items valued by the Wadi included klon peags, stick-like objects that they apparently had "many uses" for, alpha-currant nectar, and gemstones. Wadi leaders were titled "Master Surchid".
