Verad was a prospective candidate for hosting a Trill symbiont whose application was turned down by the Symbiosis Commission. Verad had spent his whole life trying to qualify for symbiosis.

Verad once worked as the communications clerk of the Federation consulate on Khefka IV. While stationed there, he visited an accommodation house where he met Mareel; the two fell in love and he took her with him to Trill when he was recalled.

Tired of his mediocre life, he decided to steal the Dax symbiont from Jadzia Dax and escape into the Gamma Quadrant. Accompanied by Mareel, he took control of the nearly-empty Deep Space 9 in 2370 during a plasma storm, having hired Klingon mercenaries T'Kar and Yeto to assist him. Although Dax reminded him that the joining could cause psychological damage to him, Verad threatened to kill the crew if Dax refused, and she agreed to go through with the procedure knowing that it would kill her. Julian Bashir implanted the Dax symbiont within him.

Verad changed greatly after the joining: he became more confident, intelligent, and according to him, felt better than ever, but he also became distanced to Mareel and eventually planned to explore the Gamma Quadrant without her. He also tried to continue Dax's old friendship with Benjamin Sisko. Sisko terminated the friendship, however, when Verad refused to return Dax to Jadzia and thereby save her life.

After Sisko and the crew of Deep Space 9 regained control of the station, the Dax symbiont was returned to Jadzia Dax. The removal left Verad mentally diminished, and with a different personality. Mareel pledged to provide care for the remainder of Verad's life. (DS9: "Invasive Procedures")

Background Information

Verad was played by John Glover. When Jadzia experienced her zhian'tara in "Facets", Verad was not among the former hosts "seen". It was not explicitly stated why this was the case. Perhaps it is because:

  • Verad only joined with Dax for a few hours, just as Riker joined with Odan for only a few hours, since the symbiont could not survive outside a host for more than a few hours and a Trill transport was over 40 hours away. (TNG: "The Host") Similarly, following Jadzia's death, the Dax symbiont took a turn for the worse, and since Ezri was the only Trill aboard the USS Destiny taking the Dax symbiont from Deep Space Nine to Trill, she had little choice but to undergo the joining procedure after only fifteen minutes. (DS9: "Shadows and Symbols") Neither the trill symbiont nor the joined trill can survive if their isoboramine levels remain critically low for over 48 hours. (DS9: "Equilibrium") Dax returned to Jadzia in less than 48 hours, and Jadzia, the Dax symbiont and Verad all lived. (DS9: "Invasive Procedures") Therefore it is possible that since the the host and symbiont did not pass this point of no return, the joining was not complete and the Dax symbiont does not permanently retain the lifetime of all Verad's memories. If that is the case, then the Odan symbiont also would not retain the lifetime of Riker's memories.
  • Or perhaps because Verad was joined with the Dax symbiont after Jadzia. Thus he would not count as a "former" host.

Verad appears in The Lives of Dax story "Reflections", where he is given the second name of "Kalon".
