Vector analysis was a technique used to extrapolate the form of an object based on its shadow and the known light sources.

Vector analysis was used by Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge, in 2367, to detect the presence of an invisible alien in a holographic recording. (TNG: "Identity Crisis")
