This is a proposal.
Meta-Trek is defined in Memory Alpha as a point of view (POV) from the real world, rather than the standard MA POV, from the eyes of an inhabitant of the future Star Trek universe. The article USS Enterprise is written from the POV of a Trek universe dweller, but the article Star Trek: The Original Series is from a Meta-Trek POV, since it is not something that could be perceived from the Trek POV.
See the difference?
When I fit Meta-Trek into the body of standard articles, I usually follow the old Okudapedia doctrine; separate and italicize anything that is NOT from the 'correct' Trek POV. For example, in a line:
- In 2268, Spock's brain was removed. (TOS: "Spock's Brain").
Note that the Trek POV is a regular statement, yet I italicized and parenthesis separated the episode source, the name of the episode is from 'our' POV, as Meta-Trek.
Now, as a separate paragraph (when there is a full statement or more that is out of POV, I like to give it its own italicized, indented (':') paragraph):
- Blah blah... ...and Data and Guinan left the holodeck.
- The part of the Comic was deftly played by comedic actor Joe Piscopo. He is best known for his work making no one give a crap about him.
If there is ever a whole paragraph or more in a Meta-Trek POV, I will separate it using the ==Background== section, still italicized:
Background
Edit
... Shatner's novels depicted this vessel as a current starship also, commanded by Captain Simm. This would fit concurrently with the Challenger's registry, which places it in the earliest production of Galaxy-class vessels, even though this development was never referenced onscreen.
Note that if a ship name or other italicized word appears in an italicized paragraph, it is UN-italicized to make it stand out.
If it is an article which has more Meta POV than Trek POV, i will use the meta msg tag: {{meta}} , which displays this text at the top of the article:
| Meta-Trek Article |
This saves you the trouble of italicizing the whole article to illustrate its POV. Use this in series, episode, or production articles such as Star Trek: The Animated Series; "Threshold"; or Paramount Pictures.
Please not that if italicization becomes the preferred META-TREK indicator on MA, it should not be used for alternate timeline information. The dual usage would be unsightly, this is an Okudapedia trait that should be avoided.
Thank you for your time.
