The crew of the stranded USS Equinox encountered the Ankari sometime in 2371-72, who provided them with supplies and food. They also summoned the creatures in their sacred ritual to bless the Equinoxs journey. The Equinox crew members were able to barter for one of the devices to summon the creatures themselves. Later, the USS Voyager sought out the Ankari for help in negotiating with the creatures, who were attacking them as a result of the Equinox crew's actions. :There is some confusion about the Ankari: It is stated that the Ankari were the race of beings who introduced the crew of the Equinox to the nucleogenic creatures, which allowed the ship to travel 10,000 light-years in two weeks, and possibly further. Yet in Part II, Janeway states that the Ankari are only 50 light-years behind them. One explanation could be that the race had colonized planets throughout the quadrant, even over that grand a distance.
