Ultritium 283, a derivative of ultritium, was an industrial chemical explosive used for mining applications. This explosive was intended for precision charge patterns using standard microwave pulse ignition devices. Per SFRA 3983 and Starfleet Safety Directive 3984/A, which was updated on stardate 43094.3, this explosive was banned for use on Class K planets or in cryogenic substrates. In 2367, this explosive was stored on aboard the Federation starship USS Enterprise-D.
In that year, Ultritium 283 was on a list of explosives that Lieutenant Commander Data and Counselor Deanna Troi searched through in an attempt to find one that could produce enough energy to release the USS Enterprise-D and an alien ship from the Tyken's Rift. (TNG: "Night Terrors")
