The ''Sao Paulo''{{'}}s motto was "''Give me Liberty or give me Death...''", a quote by [[Patrick Henry]]. The ship was "''named for the people of [[Brazil]].''" This motto was inspired by the mithology about Brazilian Independence:

At September 7th of 1822, near to end a trip to Sao Paulo to gather with politics from that city, the prince of United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves, D. Pedro de Alcântara - that was acting as regent of Brazil since the return of the Royal Family, with the King D. João VI, to Lisbon in 1821 from Rio de Janeiro, where the Portuguese Empire were ruled since 1808 - stoped to rest in Ipiranga River, about 6km south of São Paulo old centre, nowdays in Ipiranga Neighborhood, when he was reached by a portuguese royal menssager. He received orders to return immediately to Portugal. D. Pedro already did not obey the same order moths ago, in January 9th, and this time the prince knew that another negative response would bring serius consequences.

So, at that point, the prince allegedly said: ''"Independência ou Morte!"'' (Independence or Death!), and arrived in Sao Paulo to start offialy the Brazilian Independence, becaming the first Brazilian Emperor, Pedro I, willing to confront any resistence from Portugal.

Actually the brazilian independence was a progressive process that historians usually says that started in 1808, when the Portuguese Royal Family, with the Queen Maria I and the prince D. João VI, went to Rio de Janeiro after Napoleon trespass Spain - and overthowing the spaniard King Carlos IV - to reach Portugal, and there they lived untill 1821, and the ending of Napoleonic Wars, the Portuguese Empire were rearranged as the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves in Viena Congress, what in a certain way already made Brazil a Kingdom by itself, the ''Brado do Ipiranga'' (near translation is something like Ipiranga Cry) has a great meaning for brazilian people. Becaming stronger, ironically, in republican era, after the fall of Brazilian Empire and the Emperor, Perdro II, son of Pedro I in 1889.
