The USS Proxima was a Federation starship that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century.
In the early 2370s the Proxima was on a exploration mission in the Gamma Quadrant. The ship disappeared sometime prior to 2373 and was presumed to have been destroyed by the Dominion. (DS9: "In Purgatory's Shadow")
According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia (2nd ed., p. 388), the Proxima was a Nebula-class starship with the registry NCC-61952. The book further notes that Proxima was named after Proxima Centauri, which was the nearest star from the Sol system. Proxima was Latin for "nearest".
The Proxima-class starship was seen in the video game Star Trek: Legacy.
