The USS Prometheus (NCC-71201) was a Federation Template:ShipClass starship in service during the 24th century, under the command of Lieutenant Commander Piersall.

In 2370, the Prometheus was assigned to assist Professor Gideon Seyetik in his project to re-ignite the dead star Epsilon 119. It docked at Deep Space 9 prior to and following the ignition of the star. (DS9: "Second Sight")

Docked at Deep Space 9 in 2370

The writers of the episode intended the Prometheus to be a much smaller vessel, since the ship is described in the script as being 'not in any way noteworthy or obtrusive'. Also, it is said later to only have a small crew – a Template:ShipClass starship has almost the same amount of deckspace as a Template:ShipClass vessel, and thus has room aboard for several hundred people.

The vessel must have been withdrawn from service, or destroyed prior to 2374 to make way for the commissioning of the Template:ShipClass prototype of the same name. Two shots originally used for the USS Prometheus docked at Deep Space 9 were later reused from "Second Sight" to represent other vessels. Both the USS Lexington (DS9: "Explorers") and the USS T'Kumbra (DS9: "Take Me Out to the Holosuite") were represented from the shots showing the ship below the station's equatorial axis; and an unnamed transport (DS9: "Doctor Bashir, I Presume") in the shots. A shot of the Prometheus at warp was also reused as USS Honshu. (DS9: "Waltz")

Both ships are probably named after Prometheus, a character in Greek mythology.

Apocrypha

The Prometheus was one of the four Nebula-class starships featured in the video game Star Trek: Bridge Commander. Oddly enough, the game is set in 2378, at least five years after the launch of the Prometheus-class USS Prometheus. This seems to indicate that both Prometheuses were still in service with the same name, according to the game.
