USS Olympia

Owner: United Federation of Planets
Operator: Starfleet
Status: Destroyed (2371)

The USS Olympia was a Federation starship that was in service with Starfleet in the mid-24th century. Olympia was sent on an eight year exploratory mission to the Beta Quadrant in 2363, under the command of Captain Lisa Cusak.

While returning to Federation space in 2371, Captain Cusak sent the ship to investigate an exogenic energy field surrounding the fourth planet of a star system in the Rutharian sector. When the Olympia scanned the energy barrier, it triggered a quantum reaction that sent a surge of metreon radiation that disabled the Olympia's engines, causing it to crash on the planet surface. Captain Cusak was the only survivor.

The planet's energy field caused her distress signal to be transmitted three years into the future, where it was picked up by the USS Defiant. The Defiant attempted a rescue, not knowing that Cusak had already been dead for three years. (DS9: "The Sound of Her Voice")

Background informationEdit

According to Doug Drexler, Gary Hutzel and Greg Jein, the Olympia wreckage was a reuse of parts from the USS Enterprise wreckage from Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. [X]wbm This suggests the Olympia was a Constitution-class (refit) starship.

Episode teleplay writer Ronald D. Moore named the Olympia for the United States Navy cruiser USS Olympia. (AOL chat, 1998)

According to Star Trek: Titan novel Orion's Hounds, the mission of the Olympia was the furthest distance traveled into the Beta Quadrant, until USS Titan broke the Olympia's record in 2380.
