The USS Merrimac (NCC-61827) was a 24th century Federation Nebula-class starship operated by Starfleet.

History[]

In 2366, the Merrimac was assigned to personnel transport duties; it ferried Ambassador Sarek and his entourage back to Vulcan after the successful conclusion of a treaty at Legara IV. (TNG: "Sarek")

In 2367, the Merrimac was on special assignment with the Vulcan Science Academy. The ship was named on the chart "Starfleet Operations-Sectors 21166-23079" on the USS Enterprise-D bridge. (TNG: "Brothers" okudagram)

In 2368, the Merrimac joined Captain Picard's fleet that blockaded the Klingon-Romulan border during the Klingon Civil War. The ship was one of twenty-three assembled for the fleet and was one of the seventeen chosen for the tachyon network. Identified by its name and registry number, the ship's position in the network was monitored from the Enterprise-D.

When the network was disrupted by a high-energy burst released by the Romulans, the net was no longer effective in a radius of ten million kilometers around the USS Sutherland. Subsequently, Picard ordered the fleet to proceed to Gamma Eridon at maximum warp, where the fleet would attempt to reestablish the net before the Romulans got there. (TNG: "Redemption II" okudagram)

Later that year, the Merrimac transported Cadet Wesley Crusher back to Starfleet Academy on Earth. (TNG: "The Game")

In 2369, the Merrimac was again on special assignment with the Vulcan Science Academy. The ship was named on the chart "Starfleet Operations-Sectors 21538-23079" in the Enterprise-D observation lounge. (TNG: "Chain Of Command, Part I" okudagram)

Later that year, the Merrimac was named on the chart "Sector Ipai Relay Log – Relay Message Flow 1293" in Relay Station 47 Ops. This ship, in transit, sent a message to Relay Station 452. (TNG: "Aquiel" production art)

Finally, that year, the Enterprise-D was supposed to rendezvous with the Merrimac, so a rendezvous schedule was transmitted to Commander Rudman aboard the Merrimac. (TNG: "Birthright, Part I")

Appendices[]

Background information[]

The class and registry were derived from the chart in "Brothers".

Star Trek: Voyager's initial character bible for Chakotay suggests that he served on the USS Merrimac early in his career.

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 2, p. 37), "This ship was named in honor of the vessel that became the noted iron-clad warship CSS Virginia, that fought for the Confederacy in the American Civil War."

For the remastered "Redemption II", the spelling of this ship's name was changed from Merrimac to Merrimack.
