The USS Hornet (NCC-45231) was a Renaissance-class Federation starship in service in the 24th century.

The ships' class and registry derive from the Starship Mission Status chart first seen on a bridge viewscreen in TNG: "Brothers".

In 2368, the Hornet was part of the task force that blockaded the Klingon-Romulan border during the Klingon Civil War. (TNG: "Redemption, Part II")

In 2375, the Hornet put in for repairs at Deep Space 9 during the Dominion War. (DS9: "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges")

Background

This ship was named for the American aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-8), which fought at the Battle of Midway. She was sunk in the battle of Santa Cruz Islands. The then-under-construction USS Kearsarge was renamed USS Hornet (CV-12). Furthermore, the latter Hornet was the ship that recovered the crew of Apollo 11 on their return from the first manned lunar landing in 1969. In "Redemption, Part II," it served alongside the USS Akagi, which was named for a Japanese carrier that also fought at Midway.

Apocrypha

According to the Star Fleet Technical Manual, there was a Constitution-class USS Hornet in service in the 23rd century, with the registry NCC-1714 (although the games supplement Federation Ship Recognition Manual gives it registry NCC-1778). This would seem to be the same Hornet that was mentioned as a combatant in the novel "Dreadnought!".
