The USS Galaxy (NCC-70637) was a Federation starship and the prototype of the Galaxy-class of starship.
As one of the largest and most powerful vessels in Starfleet, the Galaxy saw action in most of the major engagements of the Dominion War, including the First Battle of Chin'toka (DS9: "Tears of the Prophets") in 2374, and the Battle of Cardassia in 2375. (DS9: "What You Leave Behind")
In 2379, the Galaxy was part of Starfleet Battle Group Omega, assigned to sector 1045 near the Romulan Neutral Zone to counter an anticipated Reman attack. (Star Trek: Nemesis)

Background
According to the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual, the Galaxy was launched from the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards on Mars in 2356 and commissioned in 2357.
According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia, as a prototype, the Galaxy had an NX registry prefix much like the USS Excelsior was originally given. However, when the ship made its first on-screen appearance it was given a commissioned NCC registry prefix.
