Nearly 10 hours of record tapes, including reports filed by the ship's executive officer, as well as the young Lieutenant Kirk, chronicled the encounter. ===Background===

Although no official registry or class was established during the TOS-era when this ship was mentioned, the Star Trek Encyclopedia stated that the registry was NCC-1647 and that the ship was a Constitution.

Many other publications, beginning with The Making of Star Trek and Franz Joseph's Star Fleet Technical Manual, list Farragut also as a Constitution heavy cruiser, however with the registry NCC-1702, although this was never specified. (The Technical Manual also listed the vessel as being destroyed, although there is no evidence supporting that assertion.)

The Farragut was likely named for David Farragut, a 19th century sailor and commander of a US Navy blockade squadron during the American Civil War. Farragut is perhaps best known for giving the order "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!".

Apocrypha
Two DC comic books (see the DC Star Trek article) provide non-canon appearances of the Farragut. "The Ashes of Eden" shows a model of the Constitution Farragut matching the studio-used registry NCC-1647, while the comic "Debt of Honor" shows the ship with the registry NCC-1702 (matching the Star Fleet Technical Manual).

In the novel The Ashes of Eden by William Shatner, Kirk participates in an early holodeck recreation of his first encounter with the creature, that confirms that he could have done nothing; if the Farragut had fired on the creature, the entire ship would have been destroyed.

USS Farragut was a Federation starship that was in service with Starfleet in the mid-23rd century.

In 2258, the Farragut was part of a Federation fleet sent to investigate Vulcan while it was being attacked by the Romulan mining vessel Narada. Nyota Uhura was assigned to the Farragut; however, she was able to convince Spock to have her transferred to the USS Enterprise, unknowingly sparing her life. Another cadet who was assigned to the Farragut was Gerace.

Upon arrival at Vulcan, the Farragut, along with the rest of the fleet, save for the Enterprise, was destroyed. (Star Trek)

The Farragut was briefly seen, however not specifically identified, when the shuttlecraft Gilliam flew over Starbase 1 to the Enterprise.
Screenwriter Roberto Orci opined that James T. Kirk served a semester on the ship, just as his prime reality counterpart did in the same timeframe. (Star Trek Magazine issue 171)
