The USS Exeter NCC-26531 was a Federation starship in service during the late 24th century.

Tom Paris was assigned to this ship before he was dismissed from Starfleet. (VOY: "Non Sequitur")

During the Dominion War, the Exeter was assigned to the Ninth Fleet operating near Bajor. In 2374, the Exeter visited Deep Space 9 to be resupplied along with the Akagi and the Sutherland. At this time, the Potemkin was at the station, too, to conduct repairs. (DS9: "You Are Cordially Invited")

In 2374, Federation forces received casualty reports from several Ninth Fleet vessels, including Exeter, involved in fighting at the Dominion front. It is unclear if any of these officers were assigned to this ship, or if Exeter simply filed the reports. (DS9: "In the Pale Moonlight")

Background

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia this vessel was an Ambassador-class starship. The ship's registry, which was also referenced in the Encyclopedia, was found on list of casualties in DS9 Season 6.

Apocrypha

In the Star Trek: New Frontier series of novels by Peter David, the Exeter was featured as the new assignment of Captain Elizabeth Shelby after the destruction of the Excalibur. She commanded the vessel for six months before being reassigned to the USS Trident. Oddly enough, even though the producers of the show had agreed to honor Pocket Books' request and not contradict the events of those stories, they forgot, and referred to Captain Shelby in DS9 "You Are Cordially Invited," but as the captain of the Sutherland. Writer Ronald D. Moore has stated that the one they referenced in error could just as easily have been a different Captain Shelby.
