Revision as of 16:17, 7 October 2014

The USS Exeter (NCC-26531) was a 24th century Federation starship operated by Starfleet.

Tom Paris was assigned to this ship before he was dismissed from Starfleet. (VOY: "Non Sequitur")

During the Dominion War, the Exeter was assigned to the Ninth Fleet operating near Bajor. In 2374, the Exeter visited Deep Space 9 to be resupplied along with the USS Akagi and the USS Sutherland. At this time, the USS Potemkin was at the station, too, to conduct repairs. (DS9: "You Are Cordially Invited")

In 2374, the starship reported numerous casualties to Starfleet Command. The reporting ship's name and registry and its casuality list were seen on the Personnel Status Update chart in the Deep Space 9 wardroom. (DS9: "In the Pale Moonlight", okudagram)

Background

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia this vessel was an Ambassador-class heavy cruiser. (citation needededit) The ship's registry, which was also referenced in the Encyclopedia, was found on list of casualties in DS9 Season 6 and was consistent with other established Ambassador-class vessels that had registries in the NCC-26XXX range.

This vessel may be named either for the city Exeter, several sailing vessels named HMS Exeter and serving in Earth's British navy, or its Constitution-class predecessor.

Apocrypha

In the Star Trek: New Frontier series of novels by Peter David, the Exeter was featured as the new assignment of Captain Elizabeth Shelby after the destruction of the USS Excalibur. She commanded the vessel for six months before being reassigned to the USS Trident. Oddly enough, even though the producers of the show had agreed to honor Pocket Books' request and not contradict the events of those stories, they forgot, and referred to Captain Shelby in DS9: "You Are Cordially Invited", but as the captain of the Sutherland. Writer Ronald D. Moore had stated that the one they referenced in error could just as easily have been a different Captain Shelby. In fact, in one New Frontier book, Elizabeth Shelby was shown as being dismayed at looking at the promotions list and seeing a Captain Shelby in command of the Sutherland, only to find that it wasn't her.
