The USS Emden (NCC-1856) was a Federation starship that was in service with Starfleet in the late 23rd century.
In 2293, the Emden was assigned to patrol the Neutral Zone. This starship was selected as additional support, along with the USS Ahwahnee and the USS Endeavour, for the military operation code-named Operation Retrieve. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)
On the plans, the Emden is represented by the silhouette of a refit Constitution-class heavy cruiser.
An unseen element from the Operation Retrieve charts included a list of starships, their registries and their commanders. According to this list, the Emden was commanded by C. Thomas; named after that film's photographic effects editor Robert C. Thomas. Emden's last reported location was in Sector 21803. [1]
The Decipher roleplaying game supplements stated that this vessel may be a Ranger-class starship.
