In 2373, the Appalachia defended Earth against the second Borg invasion at the Battle of Sector 001. (Star Trek: First Contact)
The CGI rendering of this ship appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation Sketchbook: The Movies. According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia, it was a Steamrunner-class ship.
The ship was named after the Appalachian Mountains in eastern North America.
