Background information

The name, class, and registry were from the plans for Operation: Retrieve and a starship mission status chart on the USS Enterprise-A bridge in 2293.

The Star Trek Encyclopedia (3rd ed., p. 470) stated that USS Ahwahnee (NCC-71620) was named for the Native American tribe.

According to a ship list included as a fourth page in the plans, but not seen in the extended cut of the movie, D. Tathwell was the commanding officer of the Ahwahnee, which was located in Sector 21835. [1] Tathwell was the maiden name of Scenic Artist Denise Okuda, before her marriage with Michael Okuda, the creator of the Operation Retrieve mission charts.
