This vessel and registry was not referenced in dialog, but rather appeared on screen in the background artwork depicting the plans for Operation Retrieve. No design was established for ''Ahwahnee'', it was probably graphically represented by the outline of a movie era refit [[Constitution class|''Constitution''-class]] vessel, but this does not seem to be evidence that is of that design, since that icon was used in ''every'' starship listed in the graphics except for the [[USS Excelsior|USS ''Excelsior]].

See USS Ahwahnee for the Cheyenne-class vessel of the 24th century.

The USS Ahwahnee (NCC-2048) was a Federation starship that was in service with Starfleet in the late 23rd century.

In 2293, the Ahwahnee conducted a deep space exploration mission near Klingon space. This ship was considered for additional support, along with the USS Emden and the USS Endeavour, for Colonel West's task force in Operation Retrieve, a military extraction intended to rescue James T. Kirk and Leonard McCoy from Rura Penthe. The mission was not mobilized, as the Federation president strictly forbade any such intervention for diplomatic reasons. Background information

This vessel and her registry were not referenced in dialog. Both appeared on screen in the background artwork for the plans to Operation Retrieve. In the artwork, the Ahwahnee was represented by the silhouette of a Constitution-class heavy cruiser.

According to a ship list included as a fourth page in the plans, but not seen in the extended cut of the movie, the Ahwahnee was commanded by D. Tathwell, and the ship was located in Sector 21835. [1] Tathwell was the maiden name of Scenic Artist Denise Okuda, before her marriage with Michael Okuda, the creator of the "Operation Retrieve" mission charts.

The Star Trek Encyclopedia mistakenly claims that this starship was named after a Native American tribe. In actual fact, Ahwahnee was the Miwok tribe's name for the Yosemite Valley and was usually translated into English as, "valley that looks like a gaping mouth."
