Type 9 Monitor Beacon Satellites were a form of early 22nd century Earth artificial satellite technology.

The cargo manifest of the SS Mariposa stated that the vessel transported five of these satellites during her journey to the Ficus sector in 2123. (TNG: "Up The Long Ladder")

In one of the deleted scenes, it was implied that the Mariposa after delivering colonists to Bringloid V, had deployed one of these satellites in the rare chance that if the colony might be threatened it would send an emergency distress signal.
