A transceiver was a communications device that combines a transmitter and a receiver. To be considered a transceiver, the handling circuitry of both functions must be significantly integrated.

The early Earth probe Friendship 1 contained instructions for building transceivers, among other data. (VOY: "Friendship One")

The starship of the Wisps, encountered by Enterprise NX-01 in 2152, did not contain a transceiver. (ENT: "The Crossing")
