Tonsils were a Human organ located in the throat. They apparently had no use, but they often caused problems and were removed.

Doctor Leonard McCoy stated that he had his tonsils removed but they had grown back thanks to the actions of the Omicron spores. (TOS: "This Side of Paradise")
