Tommy Dorsey was a legendary American band leader and jazz trombonist during the first half of Earth's 20th century. Among his bands' early singers was the equally legendary Frank Sinatra.

The desk sergeant at the SFPD Precinct 12 told Beverly Crusher that he had two ticket to the Tommy Dorsey dance before giving her a piece of chewing gum. (TNG: "The Big Goodbye")

In an early draft of the script, the desk sergeant instead referred to Charlie McCarthy rather than Dorsey. The exchange continued with Crusher mistaking Charlie McCarthy with Joseph McCarthy, stating "McCarthy? Oh, you mean the man who hunted Communist witches." [1]
