A tire iron was a 20th century tool, intended for work on automobile wheels. In extreme circumstances, it could also be used for self-defense.

In 1986, Doctor Gillian Taylor allowed James T. Kirk and Spock to ride in her Chevrolet truck, but warned that she had a tire iron, easily accesible from the driver position, in case they tried anything. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)
