Tip O'Neill, born Thomas P. O'Neill, Jr., (D - Massachusetts) was a noted 20th century human politician of Earth, a Boston, Massachusetts representative to the United States House of Representatives, first elected to that office in 1952, who served as Speaker of the House from 1977 until his retirement in 1987. Born December 9, 1912 in Cambridge, he died of cardiac arrest at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston on January 5, 1994. His nickname of "Tip" is said to have derived from James Edward O'Neill of the St. Louis Browns, a baseball player in the habit of hitting foul tips. The Speaker was an avid fan of baseball, enthusiastic in his support of the Boston Red Sox. He helped popularize the phrase, "All politics is local".
