Doctor Theodore Haskins was a scientist from the American Continent Institute present on the SS Columbia expedition. He was killed when the ship crashed on Talos IV in 2236. The Talosians, however, recreated an image of Haskins in 2254 as part of their attempt to lure the crew of the USS Enterprise to the planet's surface. (TOS: "The Cage", "The Menagerie, Part I")

Haskins was named for associate producer Byron Haskin. (Star Trek Encyclopedia 3rd ed., p. 184) In the second revised script of "The Cage", the character is consistently referred to as "1st Survivor", even after he announces his name.

ApocryphaEdit

• Haskins appears in the Star Trek: The Original Series novel Burning Dreams where, by the late-2220s, he has a full professorship in geology, teaching at a prominent university on Earth. The novel further explains that he saved the life of his fiancé, Vina, by placing her in a refrigeration unit prior to the SS Columbia's crash on Talos IV in 2236.
