A theater was a room in a building or on a ship where plays, musical performances, and films were presented to an audience. (TOS: "The Conscience of the King"; Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home; TNG: "Sarek", "The Nth Degree", "Frame of Mind")
For the Talosians, specimens such as Captain Christopher Pike were, according to Vina, better then theater. After creating the illusion for the specimen, the Talosians would watch them react and would feel their emotions. (TOS: "The Cage")
In 1986, the Cetacean Institute had its own theater, which the museum dubbed the "marine theater". The documentary "The Wonderful World of Whales" was shown to audiences in this theater. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)
Another theater was located in a building on Planet Q. There, in 2266, the Karidian Company of Players staged an Arcturian version of Macbeth. (TOS: "The Conscience of the King")
In the 23rd century, the Federation starship USS Enterprise had a theater. In 2266, the Karidian Company of Players performed Hamlet there, for the vessel's crew. The Enterprise's theater later became the site of actor Anton Karidian's death after his daughter Lenore, driven mad, killed him with a hand phaser while trying to murder Captain James T. Kirk. (TOS: "The Conscience of the King")
A century later, the USS Enterprise-D had a theater. In 2367, Doctor Beverly Crusher staged her version of the play Cyrano de Bergerac with Reginald Barclay in the leading role. (TNG: "The Nth Degree")
On smaller starships, the mess hall could be converted into an impromptu movie theater, or a simulation of such a theater could be recreated on a holodeck. (ENT: "Dear Doctor", "Cold Front"; VOY: "Repression")
