Template:Realworld The Star Trek Saga: From One Generation To The Next was a two-hour special aired 4 October 1988 to fill in two hours of The Next Generation's second season, which had been delayed by a writer's strike. In some markets, the airing of this special was delayed until 15 October 1988.

The special, hosted by Patrick Stewart, traced the history of Star Trek from its inception with "The Cage" through to Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The special also showed brief previews of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and TNG's second season.

The special however, was mainly a simple wraparound for a premiere of a full color print of "The Cage" which, according to the special, had recently turned up in the Paramount studio archives.

The program featured interviews with many performers and production team members both from the original Star Trek and The Next Generation, including Gene Roddenberry, William Shatner, James Doohan, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, Walter Koenig, Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, Wil Wheaton, Diana Muldaur, Rick Berman and Maurice Hurley. Leonard Nimoy was also featured in an archive interview (during the making of Star Trek IV). However for some unknown reason it totally omitted DeForest Kelley, even mentioning him or his character in any form. Gates McFadden and Denise Crosby (who both left TNG after its first season) were also left out.
