The Searchers was a popular film, produced on Earth in 1956, that depicted fictional events in the 19th century American West. The film, directed by John Ford, featured prolific Western movie star John Wayne.

While watching the movie Shane on television while in Vic Fontaine's hotel room, Nog noted that he preferred The Searchers to Shane. (DS9: "It's Only a Paper Moon")
