The Raven was a famous poem by Earth poet Edgar Allan Poe written in the mid 19th Century, featuring a raven.
When he was taking command of the USS Enterprise in 2366, Charlie Evans forced Commander Spock to recite the first two lines of the poem:
- Once upon a midnight dreary
- while I pondered, weak and weary...
- The USS Raven was very likely named after this poem.
