Male Edit

By what definition is Vilix'Pran a male? Usually, the offspring-bearers are defined as female. Or in the case of Pran's species, does the male receive the ovum from the female, rather than supply the sperm to the female? If so, then I assume female is "ovum-carrier" and male is "sperm-carrier". GCapp1959 07:41, June 2, 2010 (UTC)

Possibly by the same way that certain male sea-horses carry the eggs to term. — Morder (talk) 07:45, June 2, 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict) I don't know, but we have seen another example of males carrying the young in "Unexpected". Quark also once said in an episode(can't recall which one) in reference to humans that "your females carry your young", suggesting males of other species might as well.--31dot 07:46, June 2, 2010 (UTC)
Oh and he was referenced as 'he' in "Heart of Stone" (if I recall correctly) — Morder (talk) 07:47, June 2, 2010 (UTC)
He is referred to as 'he' in every context in the show. Since we know nothing about their physiology, nor do we see the officer in question, it is impossible to say why the male pronoun is used. The use of the word 'pod' makes me speculate a plantlike gestation, although I seem to recall the Ocampan (sp?) sac also being referred to as a pod. Remember that 'he' and 'she' are human-centered terms, and often in species with more than two genders we somewhat arbitrarily assign a pronoun to genders that are approximate, this may be the case here as well.--68.145.207.112 21:06, September 11, 2011 (UTC)

Additionally, gender does not necessarily equal sex. Transgender men, who identify as male but were assigned female at birth, can also carry offspring. 184.58.51.217 20:06, May 14, 2013 (UTC)
