In 2377, Umali owned a bar on the planet Quarra, when Lieutenant Tom Paris approached her asking for a job, after he had been fired from the power plant. She was surprised they fired him due to the labor shortage the planet was experiencing but he managed to convince her that his natural charm and personality would be a definite asset to her restaurant. On his first shift, Paris tried to increase "customer loyalty" from two women by giving away free drinks. Umali did not approve in the least and told him to attend to the other tables.
