This is inaccurate. The term for shoe in Spanish is zapato not zapata. In some Latin American countries zapata refers to a foundation, as in a building's or house's base structure. In most Spanish speaking countries Zapata is a last name. Pete Valle 22:50, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Zapata is the last name of Mexican Revolution War general and land-rights activist Emiliano Zapata (1879-1919). In the 21st Century, Zapata continues to be an inspiring figure in Mexico's peasant and indigenous resistance movements, particularly in the state of Chiapas, under the "Zapatista" movement.
