What is the source of this ships name, class and registry. It's not something that was seen or spoken on screen, therefore needs to be cited or removed accordingly. --Alan del Beccio 17:25, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

The registry was recently moved from background info to the main part of the article. To reiterate part of Alan's question above, is there any proof that the registry was seen on-screen? --From Andoria with Love 14:13, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
No proof. However, we accept many facts which are not readily discernable on screen based on the idea that the information is provided by a first-party tied to the Star Trek production. The CGI model of this ship is provided via ILM who did the FX on the eighth movie. (I am curious-you seem hesitant to accept the registry, yes? If so, will you go so far as to dismiss this ship as there is no proof that its name was ever mentioned in any episode or film?)--AirTram3, 2:06 am, 01-09-2007
The ship is named Appalachia because that is what the Encyclopedia calls it. As explained in the content policy, this is simply to avoid labeling ships that appeared on-screen as an "Unnamed starship" when a semi-official name is already available (same with Livingston and many others). As for information not readily discernible by viewers, it doesn't matter – if it was seen on-screen, then it's canon on MA. This ship's registry was not seen on-screen, so while the name of the ship can remain for naming purposes, the registry still remains non-canon. --From Andoria with Love 19:44, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

I'm a bit confused now, if a CGI-Model was seen on-screen,which is the source for the name, isn't the class also known canonically? Kennelly 23:14, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Something like that. The thing is, with this ship, the only confirmation of its existence is found in the Star Trek Encyclopedia. When and whether is appeared on screen is a whole other thing. --Alan del Beccio 02:57, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Removed[]

I removed the image, because I don't think it can be said for sure which of the many vessels of this class was the Appalachia. I also removed:

The ship was probably named for the Appalachian Mountains in eastern North America.

...for being unsourced. --Alan (talk) 12:18, June 20, 2019 (UTC)
