Discussion #1. I am not sure that we can call this "primitive" medical technology... even doctor phlox used them, would this not seem to indicate that although an old method... they are still effective? Primitive seems to indicate their usefulness has be removed.

1. "Primitive" doesn't mean "useless". It just means "low-tech" combined with "ancient".
