Stardate and YearEdit

The stardate isn't simply 2258.25, since Scotty also wonders if it isn't perhaps .56. The uncertainty must be expressed in the infobox, else the reader will assume we've somehow confirmed that it's .25. Either both fractions should be listed, as in my edit, or none of them. Independent of that, it is also unknown if the year is really 2258, since the Nero incident was "ages" ago while Kirk has "been a starship captain for less than a year". I would list the year as 2258?. The details could be explained later in the article, but the infobox version must not be misleading. -- 16:33, December 16, 2012 (UTC)

The infobox version is correct as per what he says. Feel free to add a background comment explaining it though. He knows that it's approximately .25 at the end, just not sure how to say it as he's not familiar with things. According to the way that the stardates have been explained to work, then the year is 2258. No question mark. -- sulfur (talk) 16:47, December 16, 2012 (UTC)

The infobox is not correct. If you opened someone's journal and it said that the date was "July 23? 26?", obviously you wouldn't simply write "July 23" in an encyclopedia article. You are speculating that Scotty knows it's approximately .25 rather than .56 and you're speculating as to his reasons. If the stardate is given as 2259.155, we write 2259.155. If it's given as 2258.25? .56?, we should write 2258.25? .56?, only 2258 or maybe "uncertain". The first option is what I had in my original edit; I'm not sure how you decided which of Scotty's fractions to pick. -- 18:50, December 16, 2012 (UTC)

As for your new version, it's not as simple as "2258.25 or 2258.26"; you can read the preview here, which matches the digital (iPad) comic I bought from IDW today. The exact quote is "TWO-TWO-FIVE-EIGHT-POINT-TWO… FIVE…? POINT-FIVE… SIX…?" Now that I look at it again, I'm not even sure if he's thinking of my edit, 2258.25? .56?; what if it's 2258.2? .5? .5? .6? It's very ambiguous, so in the interest of accurate reporting, we could merely give the year in the infobox, but omit the stardate and explain it later in the article. -- 21:58, December 16, 2012 (UTC)
