canon statusEdit

I am a little confused. According to this article, the manual is non-canon, while in fact it's listed among the "production and reference materials" and therefore sort of canon, isn't it? I would suggest to change the sentence "[...] for purposes of Memory Alpha it has non-canon status" to "[...] for purposes of Memory Alpha it has the status of a production and reference material" or something to that effect, since that term is used in the canon policy. I suppose that would have to be done for other affected items as well. 94.216.108.125 23:08, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

No, only on-screen reference/appearances are classified as canon. This reference guide is not canon, by that definition, but the best explanation for this can be found here. --Alan 02:16, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

RemovedEdit

In regards to the above discussion, i removed the following:

The information in this manual was authored by the production staff of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and as such most of it is directly derived from filmed references. While some consider the speculation within to be canon because it was devised by DS9's own creative staff of graphic artists, illustrators and craftsmen, for purposes of Memory Alpha it has non-canon status. In fact, some data is contradictory with that shown on screen due to the nature of a continuing series - new plot points may contradict previously assumed or unfilmed data.

That being said, this manual was a valuable source of behind the scenes information. Many pieces of art and behind the scenes graphics used in the series are presented clearly here.

Many discrepancies exist with the starship information presented within, compared both to other technical supplements, and filmed episodes. However, there are still many interesting facts presented in the starships section.

Unlike its Next Generation counterpart, the Deep Space Nine Technical Manual has become a scarce collector's item, with used copies online easily worth two to three times the original cover price.

This is really not all that necessary..as it applies to almost all texts in this category, and its status is mentioned here. --Alan 02:20, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
