Writer is a practicing social worker, and as such the article contains original research. The preceding unsigned comment was added by JamesKnox73 (talk • contribs).
I removed it all as non-canon. The first bit is real-world information never said on screen. The second is speculation:
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the modern concept of social work originated, a social worker was often an unsalaried volunteer working with the lowest socio-economic groups of society (i.e. street-level social work), and the term was generally synonymous with "charity worker". Edith Keeler was one such example of a typical social worker in that time period on Earth.
By the 23rd century, with the disappearance of war, poverty, illiteracy, corruption and criminal activity on Earth, the stated philosophical goals of the social work profession had been largely acheived. The challenges that had been faced by earlier generations of social workers on Earth had been addressed and eliminated through the establishment of the United Federation of Planets, and the implementation of comprehensive and progressive social and economic policies explicity set out in the Charter of the United Federation of Planets.
