Name Edit

I am of the opinion that the name should be Markoff and not Markov. Both here and here it uses the name Markoff and when listening to this audio recording one can clearly hear the hard f being used instead of a softer v. -- OvBacon(Talk) 18:15, July 26, 2011 (UTC)

Chakoteya is viewer written transcripts and therefore should not even be part of the conversation. To me the mp3 sounds like 'ov' not 'off'. *shrug* -- sulfur 18:23, July 26, 2011 (UTC)

I hope more people will make an effort to listen to the mp3 and I would like to ask you to listen to it a few times as I am of the opinion that it is clearly heard to be "off" and not just "of" (let alone ov).-- OvBacon(Talk) 18:47, July 26, 2011 (UTC) O yes, the viewer transcript has the value that one other person also heard the "off" as did they at Trekcore -- OvBacon(Talk) 18:49, July 26, 2011 (UTC)

Both the -off and the -ov suffix have been used when transliterating names from kyrillic to latin scripts. According to [1], -off is an older form, while -ov is typically used nowadays. Both are supposed to sound the same, though - so, unless there is script or other evidence that this name really was supposed to be written using -off, this title should be kept. -- Cid Highwind 20:47, July 26, 2011 (UTC)
I have to agree with both Cid and Sulfur. --31dot 20:54, July 26, 2011 (UTC)
While I definitely hear a f sound over a v, I don't see a reason to change the page name if off and ov are suppose to be the same. Without a script, both spellings are equally valid, with suggests we should have a redirect at Markoff. - Archduk3 21:14, July 26, 2011 (UTC)
It's spelled "Markov" in the Star Trek Encyclopedia. (2nd ed., p. 289)–Cleanse ( talk | contribs ) 22:29, July 26, 2011 (UTC)

Thanks all, and especially Cleanse, that clarifies it. -- OvBacon(Talk) 23:05, July 26, 2011 (UTC)
