Piper was a researcher for Starfleet at Johns Hopkins when he was killed by Peter Broad in 2270 with a Klingon disruptor they were studying, in a dispute over Broad stealing the plans for it to be sold to Captain Jackson Kahle, CEO of UniPhase Industries. With the help of security cadet and recent Enterprise crew member, Ensign Pavel A.
