There is no on-screen reference to Tyler's rank and the single rank stripe is inconclusive. --GNDN 20:42, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Referred to as lieutenant in Gene Roddenberry's series proposal, perhaps? we have treated behind the scenes sources like that as canon as long as they are not abnormal or contradictory. -- Captain M.K.B. 21:13, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
I agree that there is extra-canonical support for that assertion, hence the addition of the StarTrek.com link. My understanding of canon policy (which is by no means absolute), is that references to "behind-the-scenes" information is to be treated as background or apocrypha. While this is doubtlessly hairsplitting, such attention to minutiae is the essence of this reference work. For example, Number One is explicitly referred to as "Lieutenant." In the long history of the franchise, though, executive officers of ships under the command of a Captain have typically been lieutenant commanders and above. On the one hand, the weight of precedent swings in favor of saying that Number One was a lieutenant commander and Pike merely misspoke (as Picard did from time to time when addressing La Forge.) On the other hand, though, by confining the main portion of an article to what is supported on-screen, with due note being given in the background section, the mission of this work is better served. This is my point of view, but I will certainly accede to the consensus or an admin that deletes this message. ;). --GNDN 00:00, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
