Why does a starship require intake manifolds? Edit

Why does a starship need intake manifolds? They are not using air for a fuel/air mixture for combustion. If I'm not mistaken, space is not dense enough in gases for the ship to require or even attempt to collect external gases to power it. – The preceding unsigned comment was added by 98.219.48.233 (talk).
