Pike Five-year mission[]

Tell me, where is the proof of a Pike Five Year mission???? Sure he had command of the Enterprise for over 11 years, but it does not follow that he had to be assigned to a 5 year mission. He could have been on normal duties which include exploration and patrols. The Only evidence of a Five year mission is "Corbomite Maneuver" and beyond. --TOSrules 21:52, 27 Aug 2004 (CEST)

The term "five-year mission" was used in the TOS writer's bible "introduction" written by Gene Roddenberry. Different revisions placed five-year mission assignments for April, Pike, and Kirk. -- Captain Mike K. Bartel 00:54, 28 Aug 2004 (CEST)

I do not think things like the Writers Bible should have anything to do with canon. As you note "Different Versions" which version shall we accept????. The only way a Writers Bible should be considered Cannon, is if the fact of it has been set up onscreen, like the operation of a particular device seen on screen. Currently there is no onscreen proof of any Five Year missions beyond Kirk's Five Year Mission. --TOSrules 01:02, 28 Aug 2004 (CEST)

There is also no evidence of characters having to go to the bathroom since there is no onscreen proof.

Pike's multiple five-year missions[]

Though not confirmed explicitly on-screen, other than some production pieces for set, it's generally assumed Starfleet operated five-year missions for deep space exploration during the 23rd century. (This may have started after NX-01's 10-year operational lifespan when the Federation was formally formed and Starfleet was officially incorporated under UFP and no longer under United Earth.) In that case, Pike ultimately had three (3) five-year missions in command of the Enterprise.

He joined the crew of Enterprise in the 2240s under Robert April. April's mission lasted from 2245-2250. Pike took over command in 2250. "The Cage" occurs in 2254, during the first five-year mission (2250-2255). Pike temporarily assumes command of Discovery in 2258, during the second five-year mission (2255-2260). He returns to Enterprise to see Discovery off to the future. Following the fight with Control, Enterprise returns to Earth for repairs and Pike takes time off. He reassumes command of Enterprise in 2259. He'll be in command of the ship until he's promoted to Fleet Captain in 2265, at which point Kirk takes command of Enterprise.Playhouse76 (talk) 01:43, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

Speculation[]

I removed the following speculation:

  • There is a similarity in that in the 20th and 21th century the U.S. Navy sends out its aircraft carrier ships on six-month missions in which these units stay mainly at sea with basically the same crew. Only after this period, ship personnel will expect to return to their families. As distances in space are far greater, for spaceship purposes the duration of such missions seems to have been enlarged to a planned five-year trip by the series authors.
