Membership?Edit

Is there a canonical source that notes the members of the European Alliance? Those familiar with 20th century Earth history are aware of the hesitant relationship the UK had with the then European Union. I also am not sure that the other countries listed, while in Europe, were ever mentioned as members of the Alliance. Tfleming 15:50, 3 Jan 2006 (UTC)

Hegemony?Edit

It is not clear from Picard's remark in "Up The Long Ladder" that the European Hegemony was an actual political organization or what relation it may have had with the actual European Union or the later European Alliance. Recognizing this as mere speculation, I offer the following possible insight.

Hegemony is the leadership or predominant influence exercised by one nation or group of nations over others, and may or may not imply interest in dominance in global affairs. The surviving European Union may have assumed a hegemonic role the post-WWIII Earth (presuming the United States being unable to) and directed global reconstruction efforts. It could have become an actual intergovernmental alliance, or been simply the recognized global order in place at the time. The latter more accurately reflects the term "hegemony" and is consistent with Picard's reference to it as "the first stirrings of world government on Earth." Tfleming 02:44, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

The former version stated that :
"Europe is home to the European Alliance, which consists of nations such as France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Belgium."
There's no source that notes the members of the European Alliance, so I removed this reference.
The actual version is :
From the 20th century, several european nations formed a political and economical alliance. (TNG: "The Price", "Up The Long Ladder", "Attached")
European Hegemony (22nd century) and European Alliance (24th century) are probably an evolution of the actual European Union.
There's no references to the actuel "European Union" or the former "European Community", but several sources implies an alliance between several european nations, I must admit that "from the 20th century" is probably too speculative because based on the actual world. In the 2020s, someone state that "Europe is falling apart" (DS9: "Past Tense, Part I"), which rather refers to the political situation in Europe. We don't have many informations about the European Hegemony ("A loose alliance formed in the early 22nd century") or European Alliance ("Devinoni Ral, human. Age, 41. Born, Brussels, European Alliance"). The links between EH, EA and EU is unknown, that's why this comment is indented and italicized. - Philoust123 13:32, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

European Union (and EEC) Edit

The Picard family album contains at least two references to the actual European institutions :

  • In a 20th century newspaper, there are references of : European elections, European Parliament, debate between the cities of Strasbourg and Brussels
  • An invitation of the Gallic-Klingon Debating Society for a Wine tasting of spring bottlings from Picard vineyards of La Barre, France, European Union, Earth, Sol
