- In the first three centuries of Earth's 1st millennium AD, Christianity was an illegal "underground" cult within the Roman Empire and its practitioners often had to conduct their rites in secret. The Roman Catacombs were ideal for this purpose. After Constantine the Great moved the capital of the Empire to Constantinople and fully established their religion, Christians were able to worship openly and the Catacombs reverted to their normal storage function. {{incite}}
