Was Ares IV the first manned mission ?[]
it is never said in VOY: "One Small Step" that the ares 4 mission was the first manned flight to mars. additionally, it beared the name "ares IV" and not "ares I". furthermore, the first flight to saturn already occured around 2020 (TOS: "Tomorrow is Yesterday") and the SS charybdis in 2037 was already the third attempt to bring a Human beyond our solar system (TNG: "The Royale"). all these facts point to the ares IV mission not being the first manned mission to mars but the fourth and first with its new sensor system. --BlueMars 13:51, May 29, 2004 (CEST)
- The problem is, of course, with the inherent discontinuities in writers predicting future technology trends in TOS, TNG and VOY. Like with TOS stating the Eugenics Wars took place in the 1990s, the near-distant future is easy to slip into for stating future events. It's hard to correct the continuity errors. I personally would put Ares IV before the Saturn probe missions (based on technology extrapolation and realistic prediction), with Charybdis and its fellows possibly taking place around the same time as one of those.

- Unless it was specifically mentioned on-screen (which, apparently, it was not), we don't know if it was the first. As Michael pointed out, we shouldn't assume that it was the fourth, either. -- Cid Highwind 19:18, 30 May 2004 (CEST)
- There is continuity problem with Khan's DY-100 class that is supposedy 30 years olders and obviously much more advanced, isn't there? -Ramin
- The DY-100 appears to have been designed for long-duration missions and doesn't seem to be designed for full-out scientific purposes. Additionally, around the time of the Ares IV mission, if I recall, Earth wasn't in the best of times with World War III approaching. - Adm. Enzo Aquarius 20:31, 7 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Ground Crew[]

- The Ares IV mission patch seems to be based on space shuttle Challenger's STS-6 patch, with the same shape of Mars (Earth on the STS-6 emblem) and a similar arrangement of stars in the sky.
