I don't think it's entirely accurate to say that slavery and oppression were brought to an end by the Civil War. It went a long way towards doing so, but neither were brought to a definitive end by the resolution of the war. I think it's more accurate to say that the Civil War helped to bring about the end of slavery and oppression on Earth by the time the events in the Star Trek took place.

Chances are, this information comes from how the Civil War is described in Star Trek. If that is thecase, we have to leave it this why, possibly with a background note. For real accuracy of a real life event, see wikipedia. --OuroborosCobra 18:38, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Here are the relevant quotes from the episode:
JANEWAY: I fail to see anything wonderful about a war.
Q: War can be an engine of change. War can transform a society for the better. Your own Civil War brought about an end to slavery and oppression.
JANEWAY: But our Civil War came at a time before mankind had learned to resolve disputes without bloodshed. Surely the Q have evolved to a point where you can find a non-violent way to resolve a conflict. --Jörg 23:02, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
  • Wouldn't it be easier to just slap a {{realworld}} template onto this page, and add a little bit of real world filler, rather than trying to write an article on the Civil War based on a single quote?--205.188.116.10 03:35, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
No, it wouldn't. The Civil War is referenced and described in Star Trek, therefore we need an article on it written from that point of view. If you are looking for a real world point of view on the Civil War, go to the wikipedia. That is what they are there for. We are here for Star Trek. Real world points of view are used here to discuss actor's, writer's, stuff like that, not real world events from history. Including background information on inconsistancies (which is what we have done in this article) serves the purposes we need. --OuroborosCobra 04:08, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

GettysburgEdit

Should Gettysburg be mentioned here, since, while the battle itself isn't actually mentioned, that is clearly what "The fields at Gettysburg" Janeway mentions in "Memorial" are referring to?--Ten-pint 02:45, November 7, 2009 (UTC)

I think it could be worth a mention here, especially since we have a Gettysburg article.--31dot 02:48, November 7, 2009 (UTC)
